Like the rest of the Bible, it’s not a moral fairy tale. Jonah is about the gospel. It tells the story of God relentlessly pursuing sinners who go west when God says go east. As we look at this book we’ll see how Jesus comes to rescue people who run from God by being both irreligious and religious.
We’ll cover this book in four parts. In part one we’ll look at the sin of religion. Like us, Jonah was self-righteous. His external righteousness covered a heart that was asleep to God’s glory and the suffering of the lost. In part two we’ll look at the amazing phrase “salvation belongs to the Lord”. We’ll see that God hears, pursues, intervenes, and resurrects. In part three, we’ll see that God uses broken messengers and even imperfect messages to rescue the lost. In the final section, we’ll cover God’s heart for cities. We’ll see God’s heart of mission for Oklahoma City and Shawnee as we look at Nineveh.
